Apple is planning to launch its first book-style foldable phone, called the iPhone Ultra, in September this year along with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. Leaked images of the phone have already appeared online.
A new leak says that the phone uses a special internal design that removes the need for complex wiring between parts. Because of this, the phone may be easier to repair compared to other foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series and Oppo Find N series.
A tipster named Instant Digital on Weibo said that Apple’s internal stacking design is simple and smart. This design makes the iPhone Ultra highly modular, meaning parts can be removed and replaced more easily. The foldable display is said to be especially easy to remove and change. Apple reportedly used strict engineering methods to achieve this, which could make the iPhone Ultra one of the most repairable foldable phones available.

Leaked diagrams also revealed the phone’s size details. When folded, the phone is 9.23mm thick at its thinnest point. The rear camera module adds an extra 4.46mm thickness, making the phone about 13mm thick at its thickest point. When unfolded, the device becomes 167.59mm wide. The phone is expected to first launch in black and white color options in major markets worldwide.
Apple hardware chief John Ternus, who is expected to become the next CEO, reportedly led the engineering work for this foldable phone. He may present the device at Apple’s September launch event. The design is also focused on creating a crease-free display. Earlier leaks suggested that Apple may use 3D-printed hinges and special adhesives to keep the screen smooth.

This focus on repairability matches Apple’s recent efforts to improve device repairs. For example, the iPhone 15 models received better repairability scores after software updates allowed users to calibrate parts taken from matching devices. The iPhone Ultra is expected to continue this approach with features designed specially for foldable phones. At the same time, competitors are also improving their foldable devices. Samsung recently showed crease-free foldable prototypes at CES for future Galaxy Z Fold models.
Apple has not officially confirmed any of these details yet. However, the launch is still expected to happen in September, following Apple’s usual iPhone release schedule.
