Apple is getting closer to launching a new version of AirPods that may include small built-in cameras. These cameras are mainly meant to help Siri and other AI features understand what is around the user.
Reports from senior journalists and people connected to the project say that these AirPods have now entered the design validation testing stage, which is an important step before mass production and launch. This shows that Apple sees this product as an important part of its larger AI plans, not just an experiment.
The cameras inside the AirPods are not designed for normal photography or video recording. Instead, they are expected to collect low-resolution visual information so Siri can understand the user’s surroundings. This may let users ask questions about nearby objects or places.

For example, users could identify food items in a kitchen and get recipe suggestions, or ask for directions using visible landmarks. Apple is also working on reminder features that react to what the cameras notice, such as warning the user when a certain object or situation appears nearby.
The design of these AirPods is expected to remain similar to the current AirPods Pro 3, but the stems may become slightly longer to fit the extra camera and sensor parts. Analysts and reporters also say the cameras could use infrared technology, similar to the system used in Face ID.
This would help the AirPods detect shapes, movement, and hand gestures even in low light. It could also improve interaction with Apple’s Vision Pro headset by supporting gesture controls and better spatial audio adjustments linked to head and hand movement.
Privacy and security are expected to be major concerns because the AirPods would include cameras close to the user at all times. To address this, Apple may add a small LED light on each earbud. The light would turn on whenever visual data is being processed or sent to Apple’s servers, so users know when the cameras are active.
Apple is also expected to keep most data processing on the device itself using on-device AI, reducing how much information is sent outside the device, while still allowing some cloud-based Siri features when necessary.

Apple originally planned to release these camera-equipped AirPods in the first half of 2026, but the launch was delayed. Reports say the main reason was that Siri’s AI system still needed improvements to properly support the visual features of the AirPods.
Now that an upgraded Siri system is reportedly planned for release in September, several reports suggest Apple may launch these AirPods around the same time. They could be introduced as premium “AirPods Ultra” or as a higher-end version above the current AirPods Pro 3.
Sources from the supply chain and analysts say that after design validation testing is finished, Apple will begin production-validation testing. In this stage, early versions of the AirPods are tested heavily on a larger scale. If these tests are successful, the AirPods could reach stores before the end of 2026.
The expected price will likely be higher than the current AirPods Pro 3, which costs about 249 dollars in the US and around 25,900 rupees in India. The higher price would reflect the added camera hardware and advanced AI features. Apple has still not officially announced these AirPods, but many reports from different journalists and analysts suggest the project is now much more advanced than earlier rumors indicated.
