ChatGPT Gets Smarter: OpenAI Launches GPT-5.5 Instant for All Users Including Free Plan

OpenAI has released a big update to ChatGPT. Now, the default AI model is GPT-5.5 Instant for all users, including free users. This change started on May 6, 2026.

ChatGPT GPT-5.5 Instant update showing faster AI responses and improved chat experience in 2026

Anyone opening ChatGPT on the website or app will automatically use this faster and smarter version without paying extra. Earlier, GPT-5.3 Instant was used, but now GPT-5.5 Instant is the main model because it handles daily chats better for millions of users.

GPT-5.5 Instant is part of the GPT-5.5 family, which OpenAI launched last month. This version is designed to be fast and natural in conversations. It focuses on giving quick replies with low delay while still improving performance. OpenAI says even small improvements are important because many people use it daily, making normal conversations smoother and more useful.

One major improvement is in image understanding. GPT-5.5 Instant is much smarter and makes fewer mistakes than before. It also performs better in STEM subjects like science, technology, engineering, and math. Overall, it makes 52.5% fewer incorrect or made-up answers, known as hallucinations, which increases trust when users need accurate information.

The chat style has also improved. Responses are now more natural and direct. There are fewer unnecessary words, fewer useless follow-up questions, and less use of emojis. The replies are still friendly but more focused and useful. It also avoids too much formatting, so answers are clear and easy to understand.

Personalization is another key feature. The model can use context from past chats, uploaded files, or even a connected Gmail account if the user allows it. It can automatically give suggestions based on previous information, like recommending movies or meals, without needing repeated instructions. This makes ChatGPT feel more like a helpful assistant that remembers things.

The rollout is happening gradually, but OpenAI confirmed it is live from Tuesday for both free and paid users. Paid users can still use GPT-5.3 Instant for a limited time, possibly up to three months, before it is removed. For complex tasks, ChatGPT may switch to GPT-5.5 Thinking mode automatically and show a short plan before starting. Users can also change instructions during the process if needed.

This update is part of OpenAI’s effort to improve AI technology as competition increases from companies like Anthropic. At the same time, new smartphones like the Vivo X300 FE are launching in India with advanced cameras and large batteries, and Samsung is releasing software updates for its Galaxy devices. These developments show how AI and technology are quickly improving together in 2026.
