Microsoft has released a new test update for Windows 11 that improves how File Explorer works. This update, called Build 26200.8313, is currently available to people in the Release Preview Channel. One of the main improvements is speed.
File Explorer now opens faster, especially right after turning on the computer. This is helpful for people using older or slower devices, where it usually took a few extra seconds to load.
The update also fixes a visual problem in dark mode. Earlier, users would sometimes see quick white flashes when opening folders, switching tabs, or resizing panels. These flashes broke the dark theme experience. Now, those issues have been fixed, so everything looks smoother and more consistent when using dark mode.

Stability has also improved in this update. The main system process explorer.exe, which controls File Explorer, the taskbar, and menus, is now more reliable. Users should notice fewer crashes or slowdowns when closing windows quickly or moving between different system views. Problems with actions like unpinning items from Quick Access have also been resolved, making everyday use more stable.
There are some useful additions for handling files too. Users can now open and extract more types of archive files, including formats like .cpio, .uu, .xar, and .nupkg, without needing extra software. A new option called “Preview anyway” has also been added, which lets users safely check downloaded files before opening them fully.

Some small design and usability improvements are included as well. The search bar in File Explorer now has updated icons that better match the overall look of Windows 11. Also, folder settings such as icon size or sorting preferences will now stay the same even when opening folders through other apps like Microsoft Edge, which saves time and avoids repeated adjustments.
Right now, this update is only available to testers, but it will reach regular users soon. It is expected to be included in the May 2026 update rollout, although exact timing can vary.
