Gemini Intelligence for Android Announced at I/O 2026: Google Turns Android Into an AI-First System

Google showed Gemini Intelligence for Android at The Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

The company said Android is changing from an operating system to an intelligence system, with Gemini AI built into phones, tablets, watches, cars, glasses, and laptops. The event streamed live on Google’s YouTube channel and Android event page at 10:30 PM IST in India and 1 PM ET around the world.

Gemini Intelligence is made to work on its own and do tasks across apps and devices while the user stays in control. Google said the system can do many steps without switching apps. For instance, users can tell Gemini to pull a class syllabus from Gmail, put the required books in a cart, and schedule a fitness class, all with one command.

The AI uses info from the screen and images. Pressing and holding the power button over a grocery list in the Notes app lets Gemini make a shopping cart with those items for delivery. Taking a photo of a travel brochure lets Gemini find similar tour packages online.

Google is adding Gemini to Chrome on Android. Gemini in Chrome can research, sum up, and compare info on web pages. Chrome auto browse will do tasks like book a parking spot or set an appointment. Android autofill is also getting better. Gemini’s Personal Intelligence uses info from Gmail and Google Photos to fill more text boxes in apps. Sharing data with Google for this feature needs a clear opt-in.

Gboard voice input gets a new tool called Rambler. Gemini helps Rambler understand self-fixes, repeats, pauses, and filler words like “um” and “like.” It does not type every word.

It takes the main points and makes a short message. If a user says a shopping list with apples, bananas, and oranges, then says “no longer want apples,” the final list removes apples. Rambler works with many languages in one message and shows a full-width sound wave on the keyboard when on.

Another tool is Create My Widget. Users can describe a widget in plain words and Gemini will make a custom dashboard for the home screen. Examples are asking for “three high-protein meal prep recipes every week” or a weather widget that only shows wind speed and rain. Users can change the widget size. The feature works on phones and Wear OS Tiles. The Widgets picker adds a new “Create” button with guided steps or direct prompt typing.

For privacy and safety, Google said Gemini Intelligence uses Private Compute Core, Private AI Compute, and protected KVM to keep data safe. Outside experts have checked parts of the AI safety design, which are open source. An icon in the notification bar shows when Gemini Intelligence is running, and users can see task steps live. The Android Privacy Dashboard will show which AI helpers were on and the apps they used in the last 24 hours.

The rollout starts this summer on the Samsung Galaxy S26 and Google Pixel 10. Google plans to bring Gemini Intelligence to other Android devices like watches, cars, glasses, and laptops later in 2026. At the same event, the company also revealed Googlebooks, a new kind of AI laptop built for Gemini Intelligence.
