Samsung shared good results from a clinical study showing that its Galaxy Watch 6 smartwatch can predict fainting episodes up to five minutes before they happen. The study was done with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in South Korea.
This is the first time a commercial smartwatch has successfully detected vasovagal syncope, a condition where heart rate and blood pressure suddenly drop. This can happen because of stress, pain, fear, or strong emotions. The condition is usually not life-threatening, but falling after fainting can cause serious injuries like fractures, concussions, or head injuries.
In the study, 132 patients with suspected vasovagal syncope symptoms participated in supervised tests where fainting was safely triggered. Each person wore a Galaxy Watch 6 with a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor that tracks blood flow changes. The watch also collected heart rate variability (HRV) data.
Researchers used this data in an AI prediction model that identified early warning signs. The system achieved an overall accuracy of 84.6 percent, with 90 percent sensitivity for correctly detecting true cases and 64 percent specificity. The results were published in the European Heart Journal Digital Health, showing that wearable devices may provide real-time health warnings in the future.
Samsung said that newer Galaxy Watch models with PPG sensors and HRV monitoring may support this feature in the future, but the company has not announced a release date or confirmed consumer availability yet. Professor Junhwan Cho from the hospital said that an early warning can help people sit down, move to a safer place, or ask for help before fainting.
Samsung also plans to continue developing wearable health technology through partnerships with medical organizations and more prevention-focused studies. At present, features like ECG and blood pressure monitoring on Galaxy Watches are still unavailable in countries such as India because of local regulations.

This development adds to the Galaxy Watch 6’s existing features, including durable design, accurate fitness tracking, personalized workout support, and fast charging. However, some software features work best with Samsung phones.
In India, the watch starts at around Rs 11,999 on platforms like Flipkart and is available in options such as 44mm size and colors like Gold and Graphite. Samsung’s new fainting prediction technology is seen as another step toward smarter and potentially life-saving wearable devices for everyday use.
