OpenAI and Amazon have announced a very big deal in the AI industry. Amazon will invest 50 billion dollars in OpenAI, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) will become the only third-party cloud to host OpenAI’s newest enterprise platform.
This partnership will last many years and aims to increase the use of advanced AI for businesses, startups, and everyday users. It also comes at a time when big cloud companies are competing to secure access to the best AI models, and Amazon wants AWS to become a central place for OpenAI’s most advanced tools.
Under this deal, Amazon will first invest 15 billion dollars, and later add the remaining 35 billion dollars when certain conditions are met. In return, OpenAI receives major funding and access to a large amount of computing power on AWS, which is necessary to train and operate big AI models. For Amazon, this is also a strategic step to connect OpenAI’s technology with its own services like cloud computing, online shopping, and consumer products.
A key part of the partnership is expanding their cloud agreement. Together, they are adding about 100 billion dollars to an earlier 38 billion dollar deal, making the total agreement worth well over 100 billion dollars over eight years. OpenAI will use around two gigawatts of computing power on AWS’s special Trainium chips. This is a very large amount of power, similar to what hundreds of thousands of servers use, showing that OpenAI plans to run its most advanced AI systems on Amazon’s hardware.

This is important because Trainium chips are made by Amazon for AI work. By using them, OpenAI is helping prove that Amazon’s chips can compete with others like Nvidia, whose GPUs are currently dominant. For AWS, having OpenAI as a customer helps show other companies that its chips are powerful and efficient, which may encourage more businesses to use them.
Another major part of the deal is a new “Stateful Runtime Environment” built by OpenAI and AWS. This system, available through Amazon Bedrock, allows AI models to remember context, use memory and computing resources, and interact deeply with tools and data. Unlike normal AI systems that handle one request at a time, this setup lets AI act more like a continuous assistant that can handle complex, multi-step tasks across different systems.
This new environment will work closely with AWS services, allowing businesses to connect AI agents directly into their workflows, databases, and systems. It is expected to launch soon and will help companies build large-scale AI applications like automated workflows, customer support bots, and internal tools that use real business data.

AWS will also become the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier, a platform for creating and managing teams of AI agents. While OpenAI will still work with Microsoft Azure for some services, AWS will be the main platform for Frontier and the new runtime system. This creates a setup where OpenAI uses both Azure and AWS for different purposes.
The partnership also includes building custom AI models for Amazon’s own services like shopping, search, logistics, and customer support. Developers using AWS will get access to both general OpenAI models and special versions designed with Amazon. This could give businesses an advantage in using AI for areas like e-commerce and cloud applications.
