Frequently asked questions
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, a common average for silent adult reading. Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute, closer to a natural spoken pace.
Does Tally count words the same way as Microsoft Word?
Very close. Tally splits text on whitespace to count words, which matches how most word processors count in practice, though edge cases like hyphenated words or numbers may be counted slightly differently between tools.
Is my text uploaded or saved anywhere?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server, logged, or stored once you leave the page.
How are sentences and paragraphs counted?
Sentences are counted by looking for sentence-ending punctuation such as periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Paragraphs are counted by looking for line breaks between blocks of text.
What counts as a "most used word"?
Tally lowercases your text, strips punctuation, and ignores very common filler words like "the" and "and" so the list highlights the more meaningful words you repeat most.
